This is Dr. Rob with your weekly health blog: I have a question for you. Would you ever think of giving your dog or cat a can of Coca-Cola in their water dish as if you’re giving it a treat? If you think that I am crazy saying, “of course not, I wouldn’t do that, it’s not healthy for my pet”, why would you give it to your kids or yourself?
We have to revisit these areas where we think it’s okay to have these “treats.” It really isn’t ok, because they’re not promoting health. We, as parents, have to develop the skill to know what is good to eat and pass it along to our kids so that they can grow up healthy and strong. That is why it’s important to get regular spinal adjustments. A lot of people that come into the office leave their kids at home to develop the same problems they originally came in with.
The time to act is before problems occur. That is true health maintenance. If you have any questions about these things, you can always contact me at Bates Chiropractic at (310)545-4188 or www.chiropractormanhattanbeach.com
Physical Causes of Disease
Hi, this is Dr. Rob again; we’ve been talking about the major causes of disease.
Basically there is one cause, which is your body’s inability to adapt to stress; moreover, the internal intelligence of your body is not able to adapt to environment. There are various forms of stress, such as physical stresses: trauma, emotional stresses: auto suggestion, and chemical stresses: poisons and toxins.
When we talk about physical stress, there are two main types of traumas: macro trauma and micro trauma. Macro traumas consist of those like the one Christopher Reeves experienced. He fell, head first, off his horse. He broke the top 2 bones in his neck which created major health problems for him, thus his early death. Other types of micro traumas consist of car accidents, slip and falls, boarding accidents, as well as birth traumas. A way the spine could be brought out of alignment with a newborn are through the birth process. Shortly after that, the process of learning how to walk and the inevitable falls that come along with that can also create traumas to the spine.
Micro traumas are insidious; they consist of posture: sitting, standing, even sleeping. Think of when you’re driving or when you’re sitting in front of the computer, what posture do you have?
So you see, posture can be a summation of little traumas that can be just as bad as if you’ve gotten into a car accident. In fact, there’s a study done by The Journal of Geriatrics, in October 2004 that discusses posture; moreover Forward Head Posture, the kyphotic posture, where people were stuck hunched over with their head forward. The study measured people posture and its correlation with death. They found that the people who were stuck with their head protruding forward were closer to death.
The only thing that they could think of was that this posture promoted compression of the lungs and put pressure on the spinal nerves that feed out into organs like the heart and lungs. Those vital organs weren’t able to function properly thus the person died early.
These have been a couple of physical aspects of how you can cause disease, next time we’ll talk more about the chemical aspects.

Sickness Vs. Health
Aloha from Kaanapali, Maui coming to you with our weekly health blog. This is an exciting topic, an interesting topic. We are going to talk about sickness versus health. When you think about sickness versus health, keep in mind this analogy:
You walk into a dark room and you flip on the light. What happens to the darkness? Nothing, because darkness is a non-entity whereas light is an entity.
Now, if you have a sickness or an illness, what happens to the illness? Nothing, because illness is a non-entity. You only get sick when you pull away or take away health.
So, what is health? Health is the body’s capability to adapt to its environment from internal mechanisms. Your ability to adapt comes from the inside out.
Now, what allows your body to adapt? One of the most powerful things that allows your body to adapt is your nerve system. The brain’s job is to coordinate all functions of your body via messages through the nerves. That means your ability of your body’s immune system to fight off infections. Your cardiovascular system, your digestive system, your reproductive system, all of it needs the proper coordination of the central nerve system so that it can stay at a higher level of health in order to function.
Chiropractically, when you have a subluxation -a bone out of alignment which interferes with nerve messages- the body can’t use the nerve system to coordinate its tissues or its systems as well so you have a lower level of health. This, in turn, opens the door to dis-ease, dysfunction, and for some people, disease.
When you get an adjustment, it puts the bone back into alignment taking pressure of the nerve allowing the body to communicate through that pathway. This allows the body to coordinate at a higher level and function at a higher level which means you’re going to have a higher level of health. That’s why it’s essential to get in for regular adjustments – not just for you, but for your kids, your parents, your aunts, your uncles, your neighbors, they should all be getting regular adjustments. That’s how you build health and keep at a higher level of health. That’s one of the most powerful things that you can do.
That’s were the analogy we talked about comes into play. We are not treating sickness; it is a non-entity, we trying to building health. We add health to the body. That is our goal chiropractically.

D.A.R.E. 2011
Good morning this is Dr. Rob with your weekly health blog. This week is DARE week: Drug Awareness/Drug Prevention. It’s a great program, that allows the kids to become more aware and help prevent the unnecessary deaths from drugs. According to The Journal of American Medical Association, street drugs kill approximately 10,000 people per year. 10, 000 preventable deaths. It’s great to have this program.
Since it is Drug Week, I was reading another article in Newsweek (April 27th, 1998) that stated that properly prescribed legal drugs from a Medical Doctor kill approximately 106,000 – 190,000 people per year. That’s huge! They calculated it as being the 4th leading cause of death in the United States.
So, drugs are a huge problem: we have a drug culture! We have to really look to see what’s happening at home and what we’re really teaching our kids, what we’re teaching ourselves, and what we truly believe. One way to look at it is to see when we you use drugs. Is it for a First Aid situation, when you should use them? Or is it in every day use when you get the first pain that comes up?
Investigate it, take a look at how many drugs you have in your cupboard, do you really need all of them? And what are you actually showing your kids?
