It’s Cherry Season! I don’t know if you know this, but cherries, according to research, are a great pain reliever.
According to the British Journal of Sports Medicine, published online June 22, 2006, the anthocyanins in tart cherries give ten times the anti-inflammatory relief of aspirin.
The Chemicals that give tart cherries their red color may relieve pain better than aspirin and may provide antioxidant protection comparable to commercially available supplements like vitamin E, according to Michigan State University researchers. The new findings “suggest that the consumption of cherries may have the potential to reduce cardiovascular or chronic diseases in humans (such as arthritis and gout),” write the scientists.
They also inhibited enzymes called cyclooxygenase-1 and -2, the targets of anti-inflammatory drugs, at doses more than ten times lower than aspirin. “It is as good as ibuprofen and some of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.”
Studies also show that cherries are very effective in relieving pain caused by Osteoarthritis. According to researchers with the Baylor Research Institute, tart cherries, in pill form, may be a promising pain-reliever for this common and debilitating form of arthritis, per Science Daily, March 21, 2009.
If you look at over-the-counter nonsteroidal medication, like aspirin and ibuprofen, it kills about 16,500 people per year. If you combine that with prescription drugs, it kills 36,500 people per year. I don’t know how many people you know that have died of cherry consumption, but I think you should try some natural means like cherries.
There’s a patient of ours that runs the Farmer’s Market in Hawthorne, named John Koppleman, who told me about it being Cherry Season. His Farmer’s Market is open on Saturday mornings over at the Old Dana School. I suggest you go check it out to see if cherries can actually help you!
