Importance of Blending Chiropractic Care with Back-Strengthening Exercise

Side_PlankBack problems often are a result of a bad posture that could cause severe pains.  Restoring the back to its original and natural condition takes time, and a combination of chiropractic care with the recommended exercise can dramatically enhance recovery.

A combination of the two provides numerous benefits.  Exercise keeps muscles in their proper tone, increases blood circulation around the body, improves digestion and develops a better lifestyle all together.

The following back-strengthening exercises complement the healing process greatly:

Hip Bridge

The Hip Bridge exercise strengthens those muscles near the lower back that play an important role in stabilizing the spine.

It can be carried out by lying on the back with the feet flat and about hip width apart; the knees should be bent.   The arms should be relaxed.  The person then squeezes their buttocks as they lift their hips in a straight line towards the shoulders.  After around 3 seconds, return to the starting position, slowly.

Around 12 repetitions are recommended.

Bird Dog

The bird dog exercise aims at strengthening the lower back, hip, butt and thigh muscles.

The person kneels on the floor with both hands spaced out about a shoulder-width apart.  Tuck in the belly towards the spine and raise one leg straight backwards while raising the other hand in opposite direction.

Hold in this position for 15 seconds and then return to starting point, carrying out the same procedure on the opposite side hand and leg.

Side Plank

The side plank exercise strengthens the lower back.  It is done by the following method:

The person is to lie on their right side, straight from head to the feet while resting on their forearms.  The elbow should be directly under their shoulder.  The abdominals are to be gently contracted and the hips slowly lifted off the floor – in the same straight position.

This position should be held for at least about 30 seconds before lowering the hip.

Lunge

Lunge exercises enhance a person’s overall control of their body.  This tends to protect the spine in daily activities, such as walking and running or even stair-climbing.

Starting off with the abs gently contracted.  The hands are placed on the hips; the person then takes a big step-forward using the right foot while sinking the right knee at a right-angle.

The person should then slowly return to the starting position, switch the legs and repeat – 10 repetitions are recommended.

Risks of Leaving the Sciatica Untreated

9605942387_6e2293b844Sciatica is very painful medical condition in which the patient experiences extreme pain and tingling sensations in his back, hip, legs and thighs. The pain is caused as a result of pressure exerted on the nerves, either due to any inflammation in the vertebra or the narrowing of the spinal canal. Piriformis syndrome, lumber spinal stenosis and spinal disc herniation are common causes of sciatica pain in individuals. Chiropractic treatment is highly effective for relieving the patients of the painful condition.

Why Is Prompt Identification And Treatment Important?

It is very important for patients to recognize the symptoms and seek professional medical assistance for their sciatica condition. The doctor takes prompt prescribed tests to identify the cause of the sciatica pain in order to focus his attention on the specific treatment required for the condition.

If a patient does not seek medical assistance for his sciatica problem, it may result in exaggerating his condition with the period of time. A number of possible problems can arise for the patient besides the continuous pain in the back and the hip region.

Permanent Nerve Damage

Patients who do not seek prompt medical help for their sciatica run a high risk of suffering from permanent nerve damage. In case of a permanent damage to the sciatica nerve, the patient will experience excruciating pain in the back and legs, which will not be alleviated to a satisfactory level, even with the use of pain relieving medication.

The different treatment methods like water and physical therapy become extremely painful for the patient because of his severe nerve damage.

Paralysis in the Affected Limb

The patient experiences a loss of feeling in the affected limb, which in some cases also leads to difficulty in movement, and ultimately paralysis. The affected leg becomes devoid of all sensation and movement, hampering the patient already troubled with the excruciating pain.

Loss of Bladder Control

Patients who do not get medical treatment for their sciatica problem can experience a loss of control in their bladder and bowels. This adds to the problems already faced by the patient while dealing with his sciatica condition.

A pressurized sciatica nerve causes severe pain, tingling and numbing sensations in the legs and thighs, and cramps along with fever. Patients should seek prompt medical assistance for the correct identification and treatment of sciatica before the condition becomes incurable. Chiropractic treatment is considered as very effective for the treatment of sciatica pain in individuals.

Chiropractic Can Reduce Blood Pressure!

Web MD Health States:

Chiropractic Reduces Blood Pressure!

Web MD Health has stated that chiropractic adjustments lowered blood pressure!

According to a study in the Journal of Human Hypertension, test subjects had specific chiropractic adjustments applied to their upper neck area. They had absolutely no neck pain, but suffered from high blood pressure. 88% of the people who received the specific adjustment saw an average of 8-14 mm Hg (Mercury) drop in their blood pressure. This drop would take the equivalent of two prescription drugs to get the same results as this one adjustment.

A follow up study done 8 weeks down the line showed that blood pressure levels were still lowered. The equivalent to that would be approximately 112 pills taken over the course of 8 weeks to get the same results. Incredible!

Also, they found that the study had a zero placebo effect, meaning the test subjects who received the sham adjustment did not see a drop in their blood pressure.

In other words, you could have some areas that are out of alignment in your spine that are creating central nerve system pressure – called a subluxation – and have no neck pain or no pain that one may associate to the spine, which could actually create malfunction to the body, like hyper-tension. That’s what they’re finding; that’s what is so powerful about this study.

Spinal Disc Herniation – Disc Injuries and Chiropractic Therapy

290644114_fa50ce417a (1)Spine and disc injuries are more common in individuals who lie in the 40 to 60 age bracket. While young individuals who engage in different strenuous work activities (which involve the lifting of heavy loads and operating on machinery for long hours) experience spine, neck and disc injuries which cause great pain. These injuries cause hindrance in the movement of the back and the neck, and are aggravated by continuous involvement in different laborious activities. Spinal disc herniation is a medical condition experienced by individuals because of over-exertion on the back and neck parts of the body. Chiropractors offer different treatment methods to relieve the pain and facilitate movement of the affected individual.

What Is Spinal Disc Herniation?

Spinal disc herniation is a medical condition in which a tear appears on the outer fibrous layer of the vertebra disc, which causes the inner soft nucleus material to bulge and squeeze out from the torn area of the disc.

The tear in the disc is usually attributed to old age in individuals, but may also be caused because of any trauma, straining and lifting injuries, experienced by a young individual, because of different work related and other everyday activities. The nature of the tear in the disc might cause inflammation in the surrounding area, which might put pressure on the nerves, resulting in pain for the individual. The bulging out of the inner pulpous material from the ruptured or torn disc results in a pressure on the spine and disc which causes extreme pain.

Spinal disc herniation is also called a slipped disc condition, though the disc is securely intact in between the vertebra. Individuals suffering from a minor case of spinal disc herniation are able to recover within a few weeks, with suitable rest. But, in cases of extreme damage to the spinal disc, the patient sometimes requires surgical treatment, which does not always provide good results.

Patients with acute spinal disc herniation in the upper, central or lower part of their spinal cord require physical therapy and medications for quick recovery.

Chiropractic Therapy for Spinal Disc Injuries

Chiropractors provide treatment and therapy for the effective recovery of individuals suffering from different forms of spine and disc injuries. They mobilize and manipulate the muscles of the spine and the neck, adjusting the different joints and muscles, to relieve the individual of the excruciating pain experienced because of the different musculoskeletal disorders.

When The Cure is Worse Than The Cause

This is Dr. Rob with your weekly health blog. This week I’m concerned with an article I recently read. My concern is that a lot of times we do certain types of treatments on our bodies where the cure is actually worse than the cause. An article just came out in the New England Journal of Medicine stating “super-bugs” are being created due to an over-utilization of antibiotics. We’re using antibiotics for viral infections when they’re really designed for bacterial infections. What happens is when you take an antibiotic, most the bacteria die except for maybe a few, and those few will adapt over the course of weeks, months, and even years. Their offspring then become resistant to that antibiotic, so now when you go to take the antibiotic, it won’t work.
It forces our technology to try to keep up with the super-bugs, but what they’re finding is that it takes seven to ten years to develop a new antibiotic where it only takes a few months for super-bugs to multiply. We’re being faced on relying on our bodies to fight off these bugs where the antibiotics fail to work. We have to focus on building health from the inside out. We all know we have to eat right and exercise, but we also need a good nerve supply.
Why? Because the nerve system controls and coordinates the immune system.
When the body has interferences from subluxations, the immune system won’t work as well. So, it’s very important to get regular spinal checkups-even if you don’t have any pain- to make sure your body’s working well from the inside out.

Cervical Spine (Neck)

The cervical spine is the structure connecting the brain to the rest of the body. It envelopes the spinal cord that runs messages from the brain to the other parts of the body and vice versa. Not only does it contribute to keeping safe the most delicate part of the body, but it also regulates flow of blood to brain and supports the head.

The bones in the neck enable you to rotate your head in various directions. Any stiffness or injury can hamper your functionality. There are several types of neck pains that can be a source of constant stress.  Several people rely on medication and heating pads and even opt for surgeries (as a last resort), however, an effective and non surgical treatment of chiropractic can be miraculously helpful.

Chiropractic Care

Overview

In the year 1895, this healing technique was founded by D.D. Palmer. It is comprised of manual therapies and is said to alleviate musculoskeletal concerns. Under a musculoskeletal condition, the joints, muscles, nerves, tendons and ligaments of an individual are affected. An impact on the aforementioned can result in minor discomfort and pain to more serious conditions.

World Health Organization (WHO) in 2005 published an article that considered chiropractic techniques to be a medicine and surgery free health profession. The main focus of the practice is in the area of the spine. The method of adjusting and manipulating spinal joints dates back to the time of Hippocrates and continued to thrive over the years. Now the spinal manipulation is practiced in several different parts of the world.

Spinal Manipulation

Spinal manipulation is the most emphasized aspect of chiropractic practices. It involves the art of using manual therapy to activate the joints and muscles. With the use of the hands, the practitioner moves the joints and muscles, as per the required treatment. You might remember watching a scene in several different movies or television shows where a stiff back was fixed by giving a sudden jerk. Following a muscle popping sound, the individual would be relieved of pain.

Similar is the scenario under a chiropractic practitioner, however, it takes into account safety and consent of the individual in pain in opposition to the situations depicted on television. The motive of spinal manipulation is to enable the normal movement of the body by relaxing tight muscles and loosening joints.

Not only is spinal manipulation an important asset for a chiropractic practitioner; the use of exercise and electrical devices are also common. The electrical modalities are devices that stimulate the joints and muscles.

Spinal manipulation is the core element of chiropractic treatments and is immensely effective for relieving neck pain. Performed by a licensed and certified practitioner and being characterized as non surgical and medicine-free, this might be turn out to be an appropriate option for you.

Introverted Networking

9331457156_737bb94d3b_z

Not all successful people are extroverts. On the contrary, the most successful people learn to play their strong hand. For those of you who are introverted, preferring a more quiet existence, here are a few tips to help you network in ways that are comfortable for you. Remember, there is more than one way to . . . well, do just about anything.

The word “network” generally makes most introverts I know break out into a cold sweat, and they try to disappear into their desks, hoping not to be noticed. And their fears are quite real. After all, most networking events seem to be dominated by people who have “never met a stranger” and can find something to talk about with just about everyone. Being interesting and entertaining to a roomful of people is a tall order for an introvert.

Being noticed is certainly one part of a networking event, but you don’t have to be the one everyone’s looking at and listening to. Rather than competing against the natural-born extroverts, play to your strengths.

Introverts are by nature very observant. Rather than flitting from person to person, having dozens of superficial conversations, identify the one person you feel you most need to meet. Save all your energy for that one encounter. Be prepared with any questions you may have, or information that you wish to share with that one person. That is considered a positive networking experience.

Introverts are naturally good listeners. When you can give someone your undivided attention and manage to make one or two remarks to demonstrate your understanding of the lecture, I mean, conversation, you will have made a friend for life. Because most people are talking at a networking event, finding someone willing to listen is a huge bonus.

Prepare for the event by having some questions ready, preferably open-ended questions. That way after you ask a question, you can sit back and let the other person talk and expound on their subject. A few well considered questions will keep you busy for as long as you intend to be at the event.

Set a limit to how long you will be at the event. Never go with a group of extroverts. They will likely be willing to stay for the entire event and meet people for drinks afterward. Drive separately, or with another introvert and have a set time that you plan to leave. This way you will be able to focus on making the networking event a positive experience for you without worrying about how you will be able to extract yourself. With a little practice, you’ll be a networking pro in no time.
